Legend has it that, Saint Valentine was a priest who served in the third century of Rome. During this time, Roman Emperor Claudius II decided that single men were better soldiers than married men. Claudius II outlawed marriage for young men. Saint Valentine thought this was wrong, so he defied Claudius and continued to secretly perform marriages for young lovers.When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius order that he be put to death. Saint Valentine was executed on February 14, 270 AD. Before his death, Valentine allegedly wrote a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still used today. Although the truth behind this legend is murky, the story emphasizes his appearance as an important romantic figure. Due to the acts of Saint Valentine, a tradition was set to celebrate romance on February 14 every year.
