Joey King who portrayed Gypsy Rose Blanchard in The Act is Happy to her Out of Prison
Joey who portrayed Gypsy Rose Blanchard on Hulu’s The Act, has spoken up for the first since Gypsy was released from prison.
Gypsy was granted parole in 2023 after she murdered her abusive mother, Dee Dee Blanchard in 2015. King says she is happy for her. The newly freed Gypsy has made several high-profile media appearances, including Good Morning America and The View.
Her story is considered one of the biggest ever told, being turned into multiple documentaries including Hulu’s The Act, a scripted series that aired in 2019. The show features Joey King and Patricia Arquette, who played Gypsy’s mother, Dee Dee. Arquette won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for her performance.
While walking her dogs with her mother, King says she doesn’t have plans on meeting Gypsy but left the door open.
Gypsy served eight years in prison after pleading guilty to the murder of Dee Dee in 2015. She was originally sentenced to 10 years. Her boyfriend at the time, Nicholas Godejohn was convicted of murder in 2019 and was sentenced to life in prison. The couple plotted to kill Dee Dee as Gypsy tried to escape her mother’s abuse.
Dee Dee convinced people that her daughter was terminally ill and made Gypsy go through painful medical treatments and procedures.
In a recent interview, Gypsy talked about “The Act” and the future of her story. She admitted she has never seen “The Act” because she does not want to relive her trauma, but still praises King for her portrayal of her.
“I’m sure that Joey King did an amazing job playing me. I heard an audio clip of her doing my voice, and I think she got it spot-on.”
When asked who she would want to play her in a future project about her life, the new parolee said, “It’s funny, because I always wanted Millie Bobby Brown to play me. I think she’d be good at playing me.”
