The Global Genes Project

Hope... It's in our Genes.

Joining The Balancing Act is Nicole Boice, founder of the Global Genes Project, a rare and genetic disease patient advocacy group, here to talk about how millions of Americans—one in ten—fall through the cracks of medical treatment because there is so little awareness or research funding the treatment of their conditions. There are seven thousand diseases with no treatment or cures, and awareness is needed to build a voice for those suffering from rare diseases and disorders with little to no support.

The Balancing Act

Hope... It's in our Genes

For families suffering with rare & genetic diseases, awareness is all they want for the holidays.

Tis’ the season of giving — and what better way to give than awareness? For many families suffering with rare and genetic diseases awareness is all they wish to get during the holiday season.

It’s easy for some to turn their cheek and say “This rare disease will not impact ME”, but every single person has at least 10 genetic mutations. Although a rare and genetic disease may not directly affect you, it could affect a family member or a child.

The shocking truth about Rare and Genetic diseases….

  • Affects 1 in 10 Americans and 350 million people worldwide
  • There are more people affected by rare diseases than AIDS and Cancer combined
  • Out of the 7000 rare diseases only 400 have treatments
  • Approximately 80 percent of rare diseases are caused by faulty genes
  • 50 percent of people suffering from rare diseases are children
  • Only 15 percent of rare diseases have organizations or foundations providing support and research
  • At the current rate of approval it would take the FDA 10,000 years to find therapies for all people
suffering from rare and genetic diseases

Currently, there are not enough numbers of people being affected by rare diseases to grab the attention of major medical research, but how many more individuals need to be affected to bring light to these debilitating diseases?

You can help! Becoming educated and raising awareness will force the world to realize that this is an international health crisis. Your awareness will provide a voice for the rare disease community and foster research that could help save the lives of many.

The Global Genes | RARE Project advocates for the rare disease community of over 30 million in the US alone. They are passionate about raising awareness, rare disease education, building community and voice, and funding-in-their lifetime research.
