Vegetarians have long known that soy is a natural source of protein and a healthy addition to a well-balanced diet. But for those who are lactose-intolerant, or suffer from food allergies related to dairy products, they may not realize that soymilk is a great substitute in practically any meal that is traditionally made with dairy milk. Simmered in a soup or swirled in a smoothie, soymilk is a tasty alternative to dairy. The Balancing Act enlisted the help of chef extraordinaire Jeremy Hanlon to educate viewers on the many ways to use soymilk in recipes that will “wow”.
Hanlon tells viewers about the health benefits of soymilk, as well as the variety of flavors such as vanilla. Then he gets busy in the kitchen, making a delicious fruit smoothie. Whether you’re a fan of strawberries and bananas or prefer the taste of cherries and blueberries, any fruit can be tossed into a blender with soy milk for a smoothie that is packed with vitamins and nutrients. For a little added sweetness, honey goes a long way. In addition to replacing dairy milk in traditional breakfasts, soymilk can be used in salad dressings, cream soups and side dishes—as well as enjoyed on its own as a refreshing, nutritious beverage.
