A New Year-- A New You!

  The countdown is over, and it's officially the New Year! The holidays may have passed-- but The Balancing Act is still celebrating! It's a New Year and for some... a New You! So, here's to healthy and new changes, new hopes, new dreams, and those ever-popular New Year's resolutions! The Balancing Act did a little surfing-- and found some great ideas to share with you. A New Year- A New You!

New Year's Resolutions are often an opportunity to make major lifestyle changes or review goals – to quit smoking, drink less alcohol, diet or make employment changes. It is possible to make less serious resolutions that add some enjoyment and fun to everyday life. The big issues still need to be dealt with, but some small changes can give a lift and recharge emotional batteries enough to take on the more serious challenges. Why not consider some of the following... Start a Bookclub: Get together a group of friends who are interested in books and decide to meet on a regular basis to discuss a specific book or books in general. If looking to join an existing group, check with a local library as they often host bookclub meetings. Have a Monthly Pamper Night: Have a home facial, paint fingernails and toenails, have a long soak in the bath (with bubbles and relaxing music). Set aside time to do things that are relaxing and renew energy levels. Everyone needs to stop occasionally just to recharge. Have a Monthly Movie Night: Get together with family or friends once a month to watch some latest release DVDs. Take turns buying a DVD or rent one from the local video store. Add bowls of popcorn and the scene is set for a great night relaxing in front of the television. Keep a Journal: Start out with a commitment to write in a journal once a week and then increase it to more regular entries. Record thoughts and impressions of what has been happening since the last entry. Keep the journal somewhere safe where it won't be casually picked up by others. Coffee with Friends: Set aside time each week, fortnight or month to catch up with friends for a coffee and a chat. Find a location that is central for everyone or get together at home. Find a New Hobby: To make this fun and not a burden, it is important to choose a hobby that is in keeping with other priorities. Some hobbies are practical but may be time consuming, require expensive accessories or take up too much room. Options can include: * Knitting, cross-stitch or other craft * Drawing, painting or other artistic pursuits. * Photography * Gardening * Scrapbooking Learn a New Skill: It is never too late to learn a new skill. Learn a language, how to play an instrument, how to play chess or how to cook. There are often community college or TAFE courses that can provide adult education in a variety of subjects. Some TAFE and university courses are now offered online or by distance education, allowing people to study while they work or are occupied with home or other duties. The beginning of a new year is a great time to spend some time reflecting on lifestyle choices and changes.
