Mission Critical: “The Word Gap” By Kindercare

KinderCare Learning Centers

Early childhood education is an important part of setting children up for success in a lifetime of learning, growing, and achieving. But something called “The Word Gap” is keeping many children from reaching their potential. This segment looks at who’s at risk and what we can do about it. Join us as we welcome Linda Hassan Anderson, Vice President of Education for Kindercare, who will explain “The Word Gap”.

The Balancing Act

Closing the “Word Gap”

What can parents do to make sure their child is exposed to language at every opportunity?

Did you know that something called “The Word Gap” is keeping many children from reaching their potential?

What exactly is the “word gap”? It’s the difference in exposure to language among children from different socioeconomic bacgrounds. For example:

  • Children from professional homes are exposed to 215,000 words per week
  • From more middle class home – 125,000 words per week
  • Lower income home kids hear about 65,000 words per week

Over time, this difference means that by the age of three, a child form a more advantaged home has heard 30 million more words than a child from a lower income family, making that child able to better grasp the fundamentals of reading and better prepared to enter school.

Language begins well before a child forms his or her first words, and by the time children are 3 years old, we’re already seeing a word gap. Did you know that the best predictors of reading ability in 3rd grade is language ability at 3 years old?

Invited to a summit at the White House to discuss this topic, Dr. Elanna Yalow, KinderCare Learning Centers’ CEO of Early Learning Programs recommends what parents can do to use every opportunity to expose your child to language:

– start reading to children right at birth

– tell stories, point out letters, describe the world around them

– talk to them about what you are doing

– when driving around, see a sign, talk about the words

A child’s early learning experiences can set the stage for the rest of his or her life, so it’s important to choose the right preschool.

However, choosing a preschool can be a challenge for parents, especially with high costs and a wide variety of options. The key is making sure that the preschool will meet the child’s individual needs, like at KinderCare® Learning Centers. http://www.kindercare.com

At KinderCare, kids are offered a rich language experience that will give your child the building blocks for success.

“Choosing child care can be stressful, and we all want the best for our children. I’m happy to join The Balancing Act to offer tips for moms on how to make this important decision,” said Dr. Elanna Yalow, CEO of Knowledge Universe Early Learning Programs, including KinderCare.
