The Balancing Act

Sweeten Up Your Holiday Season

What better way to celebrate and say “Happy Holidays” than with deliciously sweet fresh baked cakes and pies using the season's secret ingredient?

Delicious cookies, cakes and all kinds of treats are traditions during this time of year for the holidays.

Of course, everyone has their favorites, whether it is a special family recipe or a holiday classic, however the one thing most of these treats have in common is that they are sweet, and sweet means sugar.

You hear a lot of noise about saying no to sugar, and there are all kinds of “alternatives” available to replace it, but when it comes down to it, if you are baking, there really is no substitute to good old-fashioned sugar.
Just try and replicate grandmothers famous cake with anything less then the real deal, and you will soon see.

When speaking of sugar, it has to be said that the “real deal” for the past 100 years is Domino Sugar, one of the most trusted household names and pantry staples since your grandparents were children. The reason behind this is that Domino, as it is known east of the Mississippi – C&H as you know it if you hail from the west, has been producing the highest quality pure cane sugar for generations.

You may be wondering why using real sugar, at only 15 calories per teaspoon, is so vital to baking. Well besides the wonderful sweetness derived from the sugar cane plant, there are a few technical reasons why you may be able to replace the sweet, but not the science.

  • When a recipe calls for creaming the sugar and butter together, the sugar crystals cut air into the butter in a way that artificial sweeteners can’t, creating a lighter, fluffier cake that will rise well in the oven.
  • Real sugar is responsible for that golden color in baked goods we so love.
  • Sugar helps the cookie dough spread creating an even “crispy-on-the-outside” cookie.
  • The benefits of using real sugar in cooking and baking for flavor as well as texture are numerous. If it doesn’t have real sugar in it, chances are you can tell.

Domino / C&H Sugar loves to be involved in the creating and sharing of recipes, entertaining tips and baking tricks. They stay involved and connected to their customers through their social channels and websites. Visit or to join in on the fun.

Speaking of getting involved, you can join them in their multi-year partnership and sponsorship of Share Our Strength’s “Bake Sale For No Child Hungry”. Domino and C&H Sugar have been a part of family holiday traditions for over 100 years, and plan to continue that sweet tradition for many years to come.

Have a Sweet Holiday Season!
