Mentoring Future Female Business Leaders With Booz Allen Hamilton
In today’s business world, is it even necessary to talk about gender equity and diversity anymore? Surprisingly, yes. We certainly have “come a long way, baby”! But successful business people on both sides of the spectrum would be surprised to discover that major issues still remain in today’s corporate world. At Booz Allen Hamilton, worldwide originator and leader of the management consulting industry, a groundbreaking set of initiatives have been developed to meet these challenges. Starting with the Women’s Agenda which pinpoints several powerful misconceptions that hinder successful women in their workplace, the initiative has now successfully expanded into six additional diversity and equality agendas: African-American, Hispanic, Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender/LGBT, Disability, Asian American and Military. Listen as two successful women from Booz Allen Hamilton explain how women are being given the tools to succeed and advance in even the most formidable of corporate challenges.
Equality and Future Female Business Leaders
Do you think that things are equal for women in the workplace?
Do you think that things are equal for women in the workplace?
It’s been decades since women took up the fight for gender equality yet most women would agree there are still many challenges and a lot of work to be done especially in the corporate world.
At Booz Allen Hamilton, worldwide originator and leader of the management consulting industry – in fact, they just celebrated the launch of the firm’s 100th anniversary year by ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange — a groundbreaking set of initiatives has been developed to meet these challenges, like the Women’s Agenda.
The Women’s Agenda is squarely aimed at providing smart, effective strategies to help them stay ahead of the market and position Booz Allen as a place where talented women can build exceptional careers. Booz Allen is proud of their industry-leading efforts to provide women with opportunities for growth and leadership.
Here are just a few of the perceptions and misconceptions that women held related to career success and leadership after a diagnostic was conducted on the experience of women at Booz Allen:
- Women are less likely to receive feedback, especially if it is negative
- Women are less likely to ask for help when they need it
- Women are less likely to assume they can take on a new assignment if they don’t have 80% of qualifications (compared to men who will assume they can with 20%)
- Women feel “less heard” in meetings, especially meetings with mostly men
- While the firm offers work / life integration policies, women perceive they must make a choice between advancement and balance
- Women may be reluctant to use flexible work arrangements for fear of reduced visibility
- Perception of family responsibilities may cause managers to avoid giving challenging opportunities to women
- Managers may perceive women want to stay at current level due to family needs, even if this is not the case
- Women are more likely to believe they can keep their head down, work hard and accomplish a whole lot and they will eventually be “tapped” for promotion
- Women are less likely to have sponsors or purposefully build a network of sponsors
Booz Allen believes that gender diversity is an important source of competitive advantage for the firm, and continues to strive to provide women with opportunities for growth and leadership.
