Three Things Your Business Can Learn from the Jersey Shore

And we’re not talking GTL, baby

Photobucket

If you haven’t been exposed to the pop-culture phenomenon, the Jersey Shore, you are probably more sane than I am (not a tough accomplishment, actually). But the kids that made “GTL” (Gym-Tan-Laundry) the catch phrase of the year can also teach you some lessons about your business (seriously).

Here are three things your business can learn from the Jersey Shore:

A focused, rabid audience can trump a broad, unfocused one

In TV, like business, niches rule. Just because it’s not everyone’s cup of tea (or perhaps, more appropriately, canteen of vodka), doesn’t mean that there isn’t a market for it.

Jersey Shore has been MTV’s best show in years and the #1 summer show across cable because it knows its audience and its audience eats it up.

Emulate this strategy by being willing to focus on developing a strong core following instead of trying to be all things to all people.

Bold is better than bland

It’s better to stand for something rather than nothing, even if what you stand for may seem ridiculous to the masses. Since you are focusing on your core audience, don’t be afraid to push the envelope (unless your target audience is the vanilla pudding type).

You shouldn’t worry about pissing people off; Jersey shore has upset all kinds of organizations and created uproars in all kinds of venues. That has only helped their success.

Strike while the iron is hot

You can buy all kinds of things branded Jersey Shore and expect more to come. Even “The Situation” has his own iPhone app that is being reported to be one of Apple’s Top 10 highest-grossing applications. The MTV folks and their “stars” realize that that no business cycle lasts forever, so they are maximizing the brand’s potential while it is en fuego.

Keep this same strategy in mind in your business. Business cycles are shortening, so don’t be afraid to make the most of your opportunities while you are hot.

How working parents use technology to monitor, communicate with kids

As a working mom, I love texting. Today, my daughter sent me a text letting me know she was attending a club meeting after school. I forwarded the text to my son so he would know to wait for his sister.

If I’m out interviewing someone for a story, I can text my kids from the road to make sure they are where they need to be. But I’m certainly not as tech savvy as some of the other working moms out there who are using all kinds of devices and apps to keep up with their kids.

With school starting up again, here are some of the ways working parents are using technology to know who their kids are with, what they’re saying about their school day and whether they are safe.

  • Monica Vila of TheOnlineMom.com creates video messages for her teen daughter to watch on the family computer when she arrives home. “I might say, check Aunt Judy’s Facebook, she left a really funny post. Then I’ll blow a kiss. It’s simple and it’s a different quality communication than a text message.”
  • Myriad new smartphone apps are rolling out that use location-based technology. For example, the new app I’m OK, in the iTunes store, is kind of a private Foursquare for parents to ensure that their children are safe “without the nagging.” Family members check in from the library or Starbucks and let Mom or Dad know what they’re doing and that they are OK — then it rewards the child for doing so. They can even upload photos of the book they checked out.
  • Some parents use technology to keep their kids on task — even from their workplace. From her law office, Eden Rose, a legal administrator at Buckingham Doolittle & Burroughs, uses her iPhone to access the iCam on her 10-year-old daughter’s laptop. “It helps me know she actually is studying when she says she is.”
  • There’s always that fine line between monitoring and snooping, but safety remains a big concern for working parents. Honeywell saw the uses for video beyond the typical monitoring for an intruder, marketing it as “the perfect system for the working family.” The home security system, called Total Connect 2.0, is set up to take a short 10-second video of your child disarming the alarm and entering your home. It then sends the clip as an email. Honeywell also has created a smartphone App that will send the video to your cellphone
  • Parents also are using Global Positioning System tracking devices on kids’ cellphones and in their cars. Sprint is just one of the wireless carriers that offer the Family Locator service, it shows the phone’s GPS position on an interactive map. The service is password-protected so only authorized parents  or guardians can locate their kids.
  • A creative variation on GPS, aWareAbouts iPhone app, uses the location features of the phone and a system of mutually agreed upon check-in times. When a check-in time comes, the app alerts your child on his phone that he needs to check in with you. The child has the option of calling and talking to you or sending a message that includes his coordinates.
  • Beyond monitoring whereabouts, working parents are going online at work to check their kids’ grades, now posted in online grade books in most counties. And they’re looking over homework and giving feedback through document-sharing sites such as Google Docs.
  • Working mother, Wendy Brown, has regular afternoon Skype sessions with her 13-year-old daughter, who logs on from a laptop the minute she arrives home from school.

Readers, is there some cool tech device or App you’re using to keep up with kids?

Reflections On A Birthday

No one really likes getting older, except during your teen years when you want to be old enough so your parents can’t tell you what to do! Now that I have had years of making decisions for myself, I kind of feel nostalgic about the days I didn’t have to think so hard. Having the freedom to do what you want is excellent until you realize the responsibility that comes with it. I love to make my own decisions, but sometimes I don’t make the best ones. Even so, I am head strong and don’t take advice well. I may listen, look like I am paying attention, but most likely I am planning a different strategy in my head, while I am nodding and smiling at you. Now that I am older, the phrase ‘stubborn old lady’ could apply. But, please don’t put me in that category! August is my birthday month and I am feeling older then dirt. I don’t like that.

I am sixty-three years old. There! I’ve admitted it. I don’t lie about my age although this month I have thought about it at length. I’ve looked in the mirror and am not happy with what I see looking back at me. My new plan is to tell people I am several years older and sit back to accept the compliments about how great I look for my age. Then I worry if I tempt fate and someone actually thinks I am that age, I’ll wither on the vine.

The decisions I have made this year on my own, while making me happy, have added so much stress to my life, I am now seeing how my health and looks have responded. Not a pretty picture.

I am very proud of all the work I’ve accomplished this year. I have pushed hard on my goals. I did not listen to anyone’s advice that might have made things easier for me, nor did I think about my health as I dashed head first into my projects. Would I look or feel better if I had? I can’t answer that question. What I do know is that I should have asked myself the question on how my health was holding up during all those late nights without sleep. Or perhaps questioned the unhealthy habit of eating fast food, stuffing burgers and shakes in my mouth, as I drove all over town trying to find treasures for my shop.

Like the White Rabbit I can be found chanting, “I’m late, I’m late.” Usually I am late for everything. Then I tell myself there is no time for anything but fast food. Running in all directions makes for poor planning. I never planned on eating so badly, nor did I plan on gaining twenty-five pounds, and having blood pressure high enough to put me on pills.

Those were the presents I gave myself this birthday after eight months of putting everything else before my health.

I don’t feel sexy this year either. I wonder why?

I stay up late writing on the computer. My sleep habits are a total disaster. Most nights I only have four hours of rest to get me through the next day. I brag to my friends, “I can do more on four hours of sleep then eight.”

I actually do. But the four hours of sleep at night are not doing anything for me.

If this were a story of drugs, booze, and rock n’ roll, the tired, dragged out face staring back at me in the photo would have an exciting story behind it. But my story has nothing exciting behind it, except that I have worked hard and have not taken care of myself.

The phrase sounds so easy, “taking care of myself”. It is not. While I fling myself into everything I try, I can’t seem to get excited about developing a healthy routine. I look after others and give my advice on their well-being, yet I don’t recognize my well-being is not its best.

I know I am older and I accept that graciously. I don’t want to be skinny, for then my face would sag. I do want to look like I’ve slept well and am living the good life I have created for myself. Right now I look like I need a nap. A very long nap.

Somehow in the last few years on my own as a widow, working hard to find myself again, I have lost myself. I am not far off base, but I have missed the ball. I have thrown myself into my life with gusto, but not with common sense of keeping my life balanced.

A photo taken on my birthday this month was a gift I had not anticipated. I looked haggard, tired and, for the first time, realized the weight I’d gained. While not a photo I want to show anyone, it is one I needed to see. It is time for a change.

Will I listen to anyone’s advice? Most likely the answer is no. While older in years, I have the mindset of a teenager who doesn’t want to be told what is best. I hope I have the wisdom gained through years of growing older, to know I need to work on putting my health in first place.

Sixty-four? That’s the next stop on my age train. I love birthdays. I love to celebrate all month long. I do plan for my photo next year to reflect the healthy life style I am starting now. Look for me to post it on Face Book.

‘Reflection’ is defined in the dictionary as ‘careful or long consideration or thought’. I think we all need to take time to reflect on how we lead our lives. Take a look at your own health habits and see if you need to make a change. Don’t wait until your birthday when someone snaps a photo of you that snaps you into reality. Keep those birthdays coming and meet them head on with your most radiant healthy self.

Yet Another Scam

Photobucket

I’m rarely shocked by anything these days, but I came across a rattler this week (no, I’m not talking about the earthquake but that did freak me out for a minute).

A good friend of mine needs a 4WD vehicle and has convinced me to sell her my beloved Jeep. Periodically I pass my vehicle along and then purchase a newer one. I’m knee deep in that process now, this will be my 6th Jeep. I’ve been scouring the web, trying to
concentrate on sales by owners as opposed to dealers. I always tell my customers to try to find one this way because not only will the price be better, but the whole experience tends to be.

Since my friend is nudging me for her to take possession of the vehicle, I’ve been
under some pressure to find a new one. Unfortunately, I’ve had to branch my search out to include dealers. I’ve gone into this with my usual cynicism and I have not
been wrong to behave in that way.
Here’s what happened this week: I found the exact vehicle I was looking for,
at a good price , at a dealer in the vicinity. After a phone call to assure they
still had the vehicle, I grabbed one of my mechanics and off we went.
The Jeep was in decent condition and after taking it for a ride we noted a
few noises and repairs that I would have to make. I requested to take the
car back to my shop where I could put it up on the lift and look under it.

This is an absolute must when purchasing a car, I can’t stress this enough.
If you can’t for some reason, then at the very least, ALWAYS bring a mechanic with you, the amount of junk cars I’ve seen people buy could fill junkyards.

Back to my story, when the salesmen heard I was a shop owner he said to
me, “Have you read the entire ad online before coming over here?” Of course
I hadn’t because I don’t believe half that stuff anyway. He demanded I come inside the office and read fine print. Since I didn’t have my glasses and I
wanted to put him on the spot, I made him read it to me in his words.
Here’s what he embarrassingly informed me. The prices they ask for
vehicles are low (not really) and they don’t make any money off them (uh huh). The money is made off of selling extended warranties and the car CANNOT
be sold without purchasing one.
WOW! This stopped me in my tracks and a little BING! went
off in my brain. That’s why so many new customers come in with those useless extended warranties (oh I’ll get into that subject soon but for now AVOID, AVOID AVOID!!). Well as you can imagine, I walked right out of there, but not before telling a few shoppers to go elsewhere of course (I’m sure they didn’t listen to me but that’s their loss). So the quest continues and I’m still in the market.

Jeep Chrysler can you hear me? I need a new one !!!!

Never Judge a Book by it’s Cover

This week I could not help but notice how many events had interesting names that really were misleading. Not as a way to deceive anyone, mind you. But rather in a way that one could misconstrue what the event was actually going to feature. I thought I would share of few of these with you this week and hope that you find them, well, interesting. The names were curious indeed. A GatorFest that has absolutely nothing to do with Gators; Not the reptilian ones in Florida or the famous university alumni. It turns out it is quite a whimsical event where the parade stands still and the people move around it. There is also a Tumbleweed festival that does take place in Kansas the tumbleweed capital of the world, but has absolutely nothing to do with Tumbleweeds. I found a Hamfest that doesn’t serve ham and a frog folly with no frogs. Hum, am I confused? Not really. I am amused. The culture and traditions throughout the U.S. never cease to amaze me. Celebrity Baby Scoop Takes a Look at 10 Celebrity Home Birth

Friday, August 26th, 2011

As home births become increasingly popular, more and more celebrity moms are opting to have their babies in the comforts of their own home.
From the arrival of Jennifer Connelly and Paul Bettany’s newest addition, daughter Agnes Lark, born via home birth, to Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady’s son Benjamin born at their home in December 2009, to Alyson Hannigan and Alexis Denisof’s now 2-year-old daughter Satyana born at home, the celebs are joining the trend!

Celebrity Baby Scoop interviewed recent parents about their experiences.

Let’s take a look at 10 celebrities who had home births.

Jennifer Connelly:

The latest celebrity to join in the home birth craze is Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Connelly. The 40-year-old actress and husband, fellow actor Paul Bettany, welcomed daughter Agnes Lark Bettany in their New York City home on May 31. Baby Agnes was born via planned home water birth in a birthing pool.
Everyone is healthy and doing well,” Jennifer’s rep said. “The family is very excited.”

Erykah Badu:

R&B singer Erykah Badu has given birth to all three of her children – Seven Sirius, now 13, Puma Sabit, now 6, and Mars Merkaba, now 2 – at home. The ‘First Lady of Neo-Soul’ opened up about her home birthing experience:
I had all my children at home, naturally,” Erykah said. “First my son [Seven Sirius] was born at home in 1997, because that’s the natural environment, the old way. There’s not a lot of fuss and moving around. I had a very wise doula and midwives giving me the freedom to continue living my life. I didn’t have to uproot myself… Maybe to some it’s scary, but preparation is the whole key. When a mother has found out she’s going to have a baby, her whole life — her diet, her mood, her energy — should kind of prepare her. After she prepares herself, fear is never a part of it. I expected success and health, so I made sure I surrounded myself with it. By the time I had my third baby, childbirth seemed a very natural part of life to me.”

Gisele Bündchen:

One of the latest celeb moms to give birth naturally – and possibly the most outspoken on the topic – is supermodel Gisele Bündchen. The Victoria’s Secret model gave birth to her first child, Benjamin, in December, 2009 and has openly spoken about her drug-free and pain-free home water birth.
My delivery was in a bath tub, in water,” Gisele said. “I wanted to have a home birth. I wanted to be very aware and present during the birth… I didn’t want to be drugged up. So I did a lot of preparation, I did yoga and meditation, so I managed to have a very tranquil birth at home. It didn’t hurt in the slightest. The whole time my mind was focused in each contraction on the thought ‘my baby is closer to coming out.’”

A few weeks later the supermodel looked svelte on the cover of Vogue and spoke of her “empowered” birth experience.

I wanted to experience the transformation,” the model mom said. “It was the most amazing experience of my life, feeling him come through my body. And once he was born, I never felt so empowered as looking at him and thinking, Oh, my God, we did it together!”

The Brazilian beauty later wrote on her blog:

I am blessed to have been able to have a home birth surrounded by love, where I was able to feel safe,” she wrote. “It was a powerful experience. I never felt so vulnerable but so strong at the same time. It was amazing to experience my body become free to do what it was made to do by allowing my mind and my body to let go and be free to experience the changes taking place within… I was just there… focusing on my breathing and relaxing the best that I could… so present, to witness the biggest miracle in my life happen before my very own eyes. To give life to another being, what a gift!”

Kaitlin Olson:

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Kaitlin Olson and her costar hubby Rob McElenney welcomed their first child, son Axel Lee, on September 1, 2010.

Kaitlin gave birth to their son in the comforts of their home just as her own mother welcomed her. The actress said she is “incredibly grateful to have access to Western medicine” but “[doesn’t] think that childbirth is a medical problem that needs intervention unless there is a complication.”

I decided on a home birth because I believe that as long as a pregnancy is normal and complication-free, your body knows what to do and does not need medical intervention. I think the key to having a baby naturally is being able to completely relax and get out of the way of your body’s ability to get the job done.”

She admitted, however, that her decision to give birth at home came with “a lot of mixed reactions.”
“Most of our friends have been very supportive because they know us well enough to know that we are the kind of people who do our research and make informed decisions,” she explained. “The people who panic and think we are crazy are the ones who haven’t done any research themselves.”
I don’t blame them though,” she added. “We aren’t really taught much about childbirth and labor in America. On TV and in movies, most of what you see on the subject are women screaming in pain and a lot of emergency c-sections. The fact of the matter is that countries whose standard is for women to deliver their babies at home with midwives have the lowest complication, intervention and infant fatality rates.”

Maria Bello:

Actress Maria Bello said she “can’t imagine giving birth in a sterile environment like a hospital,” and that’s one reason that she labored with son Jackson Blue, now 10, in her bed. The mom-of-one shared that during the “22 hours of labor,” she “had a midwife and a thunderstorm with nothing more than an aspirin.” Although there were “times where I wanted to say, ‘Get the ambulance — I’m done,’” Maria told herself she could get through it

Nelly Furtado:

Canadian songstress Nellie Furtado is a self-proclaimed “hippie mom” and has opened up about the birth of her daughter Nevis in September 2003. The 32-year-old mom-of-one – who has written/sang hits such as I’m like a Bird and Maneater – proudly said, “I had a home birth with midwives.”

Cindy Crawford:

Model mom-of-two Cindy Crawford had both of her children – son Presley, now 11, and daughter Kaia, now 9 – at home with her husband Rande Gerber and three midwives on hand. She spoke of the home birth experience:

I didn’t tell anyone last time because a lot of people are against home birth and tell you horror stories. Even my husband said at first, ‘Why are we doing this?’” But she went on to say her home birth was ‘absolutely surreal.’”

Pamela Anderson:

Former Baywatch babe and Playboy model, Pamela Anderson, gave birth to both of her sons – Brandon, now 15, and Dylan, now 13 – at home, with a midwife, without any drugs. The 43-year-old Canadian native talked about her water birth with talk show host Larry King:

I gave birth at home both times–natural–with a midwife, in water…with nothing. Not even Tylenol.”

Alyson Hannigan:

Alyson Hannigan has quickly become one of our favorite celebrity moms since the birth of her first child, Satyana, in March 2009. Celebrity Baby Scoop sat down with the 37-year-oldHow I Met Your Mother star and asked about her drug-free home birth:

Yes. I did use a midwife and a doula. We had the option of having a doctor there, but even he said you’ll only need me if you need to be transferred to the hospital–which thankfully, I did not need.”

Mayim Bialik:

Mayim Bialik has really ‘blossomed’ into an amazing and outspoken mother! An advocate of attachment parenting, Mayim also empowers women to consider medication-free home births. The 35-year-old mother-of-two and star of The Big Bang Theory talked to Celebrity Baby Scoop about her birth stories.

I think the ultimate message is that for those that want to have a natural birth; there are ways to do it successfully and healthily. It is beneficial to the mother and the baby. I refuse to give in to a set of beliefs that makes women afraid of their bodies and birth. I have been very open about our birth stories; my first son was born in a hospital after a weekend of labor at home, but I didn’t use any pain medication and my second son was born at home unassisted until pushing, with my almost 3 year old watching the whole thing from his highchair. It has been documented that most births can proceed successfully if left uninterrupted and without medical “interventions” – but you need to be surrounded by a community that understands that birth doesn’t progress a centimeter an hour.

That’s not normal nor has it ever been.”

The list goes on…

Ricki Lake’s documentary about home birth, The Business of Being Born, empowered women everywhere to have unmedicated births at home. She gave birth to her second son Owen, now 10, at home in a bathtub

In September 2007, British singing sensation Charlotte Church gave birth to her daughter Ruby at her home in Wales. The then-21-year-old singer bought a birthing pool for the delivery which was attended by two midwives.

Other celebrities who have birthed at home include Lisa Bonet, best known for her role as Denise Huxtable on The Cosby Show, Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep, andGhost star Demi Moore who reportedly had all three of her children at home.

Tequila Sunrise Popsicles

Friday, August 26th, 2011

I’m dying to try something a bit more grown up when it comes to making Popsicles – infused with booze.

Photobucket

You want to try one, don’t you?

I read that the Fountainbleu Miami Beach serves vodka popsicles at their poolside bar. Have you ever been to the Flountainbleu? If I close my eyes, I can still see their dreamy pools cape with a waterfall that looks over Miami beach and the ocean…………aaaahh!

I’d love to have my own taste of Miami beach in landlocked Ohio.

I don’t have vodka.

I’m too lazy to run to the store to buy some.

I rooted around in the pantry and pulled out a bottle of Jose Cuervo Especial The Balancing Act sent for me to develop recipes. Well, mixed drinks use recipes, don’t they?

Actually Husband and I are using the Jose Cuervo for cooking. We have to make a few tweaks to the recipe before it’s ready to post. However, the whole desire for Popsicles and arrival of Jose Cuervo Especial was fate. The Balancing Act sent it right after I came home from an out of state family emergency. How’s that for timing? Thanks gals!

Back to the booze pop story.

When I think tequila, I automatically think margarita. How festive in a Popsicle!

Sadly, I do not have margarita mix either.

Yep, I’m still to lazy to run to the store to buy some.

I should mention there are five grocery stores in a four mile radious of my house. But yeah, running to the store requires finding car keys and my wallet. I rarely leave with just the item on my list either. I’m a foodie and am tempted to buy interesting ingredients all. the. time.

It’s best for me to use what I have. Especially when I’m trying to rebuild our household emergency fund.

Besides, I’m in the mood for something sweet, not tart like a traditional margarita. Since there has to be a significant amount of juice in the mix and a kiss of Jose Cuervo Espeical or it will not freeze into a Popsicle I used what I had on hand and went retro. I made tequila sunrise Popsicles!

I bought a set of Prepara Volcano BPA free Popsicle molds earlier in the summer to make Popsicles. I think it’s easier to get the finished product out of individual Popsicle molds than my other set of Popsicle molds that are in a row like an ice cube tray. The Prepara Volcano Popsicle molds allow me to color code the Popsicles so I know which ones are for grown ups only.

Tequila Sunrise Popsicle Recipe

You will need:

5 cups of orange juice
1/c up grenadine
2 teaspoons of Jose Cuervo Especial tequila

Make it:

1. Mix the orange juice, grenadine, and Jose Cuervo Especial tequila together. 2. Pour the tequila sunrise mixture into a Popsicle mold. 3. Put the Popsicle molds in the freezer and wait and wait and wait until the tequila sunrise Popsicles freeze. 4. Once the Popsicles freeze completely, remove from the mold and enjoy!
My friends hailed me a bartending goddess. That means you should probably make them too.

Beware of Moms Shopping for School Supplies

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Photobucket

You would think that the most practical time to go shopping for school supplies would be at the end of August. However, if you do actually wait until the end of August, chances are, by the time you get to the store, it will be completely sold out of everything that you need and you will go from store to store looking for just the right protractor until you end up having a school supply-induced nervous breakdown.

This year, I decided to get a jump on the crowds and do our school supply shopping early. I was thrilled that were no crowds and there was a good supply of everything we needed. Mechanical pencils? No problem. Three subject binders? Got em. But when we got to the black and white composition notebooks, our shopping trip hit a dead end.

We turned the store upside down, but we could not find the darn things. I knew the store carried them but after half an hour of searching, I only found one lone composition notebook partially buried beneath some Hello Kitty-themed supplies.
I was really annoyed. Our easy outing has slowly turned into an epic composition notebook expedition.

While I looked around in vain for a salesperson to harass, a woman with a cart full of school supplies approached me.

“Where did you find that,” she asked accusingly.

“Over there,” I said, pointing to the Hello Kitty shelf. “But I don’t think that’s where they belong and I’m pretty sure there aren’t anymore.”

“So you’re telling me that’s the ONLY one,” she said with her hands on her hips. “You’re holding the ONLY black and white composition notebook in this store?”

I couldn’t decide if this woman was a member of the school-supply police and was placing me under arrest for wanton composition notebook hoarding, or if she was just nuts.

“Well, I don’t know for a fact that this is the only one,” I said defensively. “It’s just the only one I could find.”

“You know, I decided to shop early this year specifically so I wouldn’t have this problem and yet here I am anyway without a black and white composition notebook because YOU got the last one!” She glared at me.

I decided she was indeed nuts, and figured the only way to get out of this confrontation unscathed… was to lie.

“There are more school supplies down there by gift wrap,” I said pointing to the other end of the store. “I’m pretty sure there are more black and white notebooks there.”

As Crazy School-Supply Lady grabbed her cart and took off to find the mythical notebooks, I grabbed my cart, my kids, and my one lone black and white composition notebook and ran to the checkout lines before she could realize she’d been duped.

I quickly unloaded our stuff onto the checkout belt and was about to pay when my son pulled on the sleeve of my arm.
“Hey Mom, look!”

There, on the display next to the checkout, was an entire shelf of black and white composition notebooks.

“Should we go tell the lady we found them,” he asked. I shook my head.

“No,” I said looking around nervously. “But grab four more so we don’t have to come back again next year!”
