Giuliana Rancic: “We’re Done with IVF for Now”

Monday, January 31st, 2011

In going public with their fertility struggles, Bill and Giuliana Rancic have helped shine a spotlight on an issue that affects so many families.

The beautiful E! host took time out to talk to Celebrity Baby Scoop about her great new web site, FabFitFun, the next step in their journey to conceive, and why she feels she’s “never been happier.”

Photobucket

CBS: Tell us about your new site, fabfitfun.com

GR: “I was inspired to create fabfitfun.com because I have over 2,000,000 Twitter followers and I was always sharing beauty and fitness tips- there’s only so much you can do in 140 characters! I realized I needed a great website to really respond to what people were asking me. Every day I email my top picks out to my subscribers; today it was my favorite age defying moisturizers.”

CBS: What sets Fabfitfun apart from other fitness, fashion, beauty and style websites?

GR: “Well, we’re not trying to sell advertising; it really is just my picks and it’s real information! We’re trying to mold the blogs to fit all the requests from our followers. I’ve collected so many great tips from working in Hollywood, from doing research and of course, celebrity interviews.”

CBS: Although many people are reluctant to talk about it, 1 in 8 couples experience fertility issues. What made you want to come forward publicly with your struggles?

GR: “We did our reality show and the crew was there when it happened and we didn’t want to have to tell 20 people in the room to keep a secret! Bill and I are very honest people and we didn’t want to live a lie. Afterwards, we received so much amazing feedback that our privacy was a fine price to pay for literally the 1000’s and 1000’s of people we helped. We were just overwhelmed with the amount of emails, so we felt we did the right thing.”

CBS: We were so sorry to hear about your miscarriage- how are you feeling now? Are you planning to go ahead with another round of IVF Treatments?

GR: “Bill and I are taking time off from the process and we are done with IVF for now. We are enjoying a more relaxed time; not having to run home after an awards show and give myself a shot is a relief! Right now, we are trying naturally- no shots, no ovulation tests – nothing. We are taking in one day at a time. I’m really enjoying working out again too and I’ve never been happier; I love being fit. When you’re on IVF you have to take things very easy with working out and be careful etc, but right now, we’ll have to wait and see!”

CBS: Have you considered adoption? Or will you continue with IVF until you successfully welcome a biological child?

GR: “Bill’s sister adopted so it’s in our family. We are open to the idea, so we will have to wait and see. Right now we are so busy with work and planning trips- we’re ok where we are!”

CBS: You and Bill seem so happy together. What’s your secret to your successful marriage?

GR: “I think our secret is that we treat each other with respect. With our show, we wanted to show people a happy, cool marriage where people treat each other well. We have arguments of course, but we never cross the line. I don’t trash him to my girlfriends either- I think that is very important because once you start disrespecting him behind his back, it spills over into the house. We both grew up that way; we came from families where our parents showed each other respect and I think that’s key. We also don’t let our ruts go on to long. Every day is an opportunity to mix things up and change your perspective. And I’m not talking about an expensive cruise here- for example: jog a different route together. It breaks the monotony and changes your conversation.”

CBS: What can we expect to see on the next season of Giuliana & Bill?

GR: “Well, we just wrapped season three and we’re in the process right now of deciding if there will be a season four. If we do it, we will definitely want some time off! It’s been really nice not having the cameras around.”

CBS: Do you have any upcoming projects you would like to tell our readers about?

GR: “Currently, I’m in the middle of awards season and all the red carpet shows and I also have The Fashion Police with Joan Rivers that’s on Friday nights on E!- which is just a blast; my website (and right now, it’s off to a great start!) and traveling. This Thursday (January 20th) I will be in Miami supporting Dress for Success for Tropicana Trop50 with the “Girlfriends Giving Goodness” event. You can go to the Trop50 to nominate your best girlfriend for a $1000 award. The most fabulous stories will be considered and with every submission, Trop50 will donate $10 to Dress for Success.”

How A Couch Can Change Your Lifestyle!

Monday, January 31st, 2011

La La La! I am a namedropper. I never thought of myself as that sort of person, but this week, I’ve found I like to toss this name around….Tommy Bahama. I didn’t know Tommy last week, this week he is my new best friend. I have called all my girlfriends and told them about Tommy Baaahaama. I am sleeping with Tommy during the day and dreaming of him at night. I like to stroke Tommy Bahama and remind Tommy he is now mine.

What is all this fuss about? I bought a couch. Not just any couch, but a Tommy Bahama couch. It is sitting in my living room and has changed my attitude. It may have changed my lifestyle.

The label on my sofa, tucked under one long cushion that clips to either side of the couch, reads, Tommy Bahama, Life Is One Long Weekend, Lexington Furniture.

Photobucket

Life Is One Long Weekend. Well, that sold me. How can you not own a piece of furniture that sends you a message that is so fun, so relaxing?

The road to find my Tommy Bahama was a winding one for sure. A few weeks ago I wrote a post about looking at a house that was in the neighborhood where I was opening a little antique shop. I didn’t start out planning on looking at real estate, but I did. A big fiasco, that ended with my deciding the only change I needed was to change out the couch in my living room. Simple? Yes!…Well, no, not really.

I went to the Salvation Army (I am after all, a thrift shop shopper) and found a lovely, durable, almost new, sofa for $115. It looked comfy, felt comfy, but when I got it home, it was not large enough for me to be comfy with three of my six dogs cuddling on it.

My old couch of twenty-five years had been taken away when this one was delivered. It did wonders for the room, but did not work for my lifestyle. You may remember that lifestyle – writer with six dogs.

The same day I bought my $115 sofa at the Salvation Army, I did spy a beautiful sofa that was more expensive. It was $399. That was more than I, the thrifty shopper, would ever pay for a sofa. (You should see the cottage beauty in my guest room for $65. Rachel Ashwell would be jealous. And yes, that name I do know from all the years I sold a shabby lovely look at the antique shows).

I do not know new furniture. I apparently don’t know designer apparel either. But then, you don’t find me at the mall. I am always at a thrift store.

But that sofa with its antique look haunted me.

At 5:45, fifteen minutes before the Salvation Army Thrift Store was to close, I raced in like a maniac looking for that beauty. It was still there! Delighted and relieved, I threw myself on it, and an amazing thing happened. I no longer felt stressed. I felt like, gee, it was the weekend, and I was relaxing with a Margarita.

I lifted up the long, soft, plush cushion and saw the label, Tommy Bahama, Life Is One Long Weekend.  Those words made up my mind. I don’t know this Tommy Bahama guy, but I do love his message.

“Mine!” I called to the clerk at the counter, frantically waving one hand. My other hand was gently caressing the soft moss green velvety feeling fabric.

He stared back at me. I guess I looked funny slouched all over the sofa.

“Just pull the bottom half of the ticket and bring it up here.”

$399. I felt a moment of guilt. I had just purchased a couch that I had no idea what to do with now. But I had to have Tommy.

“It’s been here a week. You get 10% off that price.”

So for less than $400, with tax included, I bought my second new (new to me, gently used to the world) sofa.

I still wasn’t sure who Tommy Bahama was. But I sure was liking him!

That night I Googled Tommy Bahama and found my couch. Retail, on sale, it was priced at $2999.00. OMG. That moment every thrifty shopper hopes for, a true deal.

I now brag about my latest find. The name, Tommy Bahama, rolls off my tongue as I casually say it repeatedly. “Tommy Bahama, Tommy Bahama. I think I’ll name my next dog, Tommy Bahama.”

I am an idiot. Both in my lack of knowledge of this brand name and my silliness in saying it constantly. All my friends knew the name. Where have I been? I was just the gal in the right place at the right time to discover a couch I love!

My other couch? The first new (gently used) one? It is sitting in my sunroom where the dogs love to curl up on it, while I am in my little wicker chair, writing away on the computer. I flipped the old uncomfortable antique chairs to my shop and moved the sofa in.

Thanks to Tommy Bahama, I have a smashing look in my living room, and a sunroom that is now a comfy den.

Yes, the dogs get up on Tommy Bahama when we are in the living room. There is room for most of us. It is, after all, only a couch; but it makes everyday a weekend for the writer with six dogs!

May I introduce you to my Tommy Bahama. Wouldn’t you like to curl up and nap on Tommy?

If you haven’t tried thrift store shopping, I highly recommend it!

First Question

Monday, January 31st, 2011

Q: Is it at all helpful for me to try to imitate vocally the sound my car is making? Donna

A:  Probably not since it may sound one way to you and another way to someone else. Also bottom line, what are you trying to achieve with this imitation? You are asking the mechanic to guess and the only way to get a proper diagnosis is to bring the car in and let them see what the problem is. I get these phone calls all the time, I usually have no idea what they’re talking about (sounds like a porpoise birthing it’s baby to me) so I always say the same thing. Just drive it by and let us hear it, there’s no charge for us to look at it (very important note here, there should be NO CHARGE for this) and if we think it’s important we’ll have you leave it.

This week there were so many interesting and exciting events going on all over the country. One of my personal favorites is the Gasparilla Pirate Festival.  This event is over 100 years old. It has become an annual tradition of epic proportions in Tampa Florida.

The event features an actual pirate invasion of the city by a real pirate ship. Legend has it that pirate Jose Gaspar , fancied himself by the name Gasparilla and the city of Tampa has named him their mascot because he was a  ”hearty old swashbuckler with courtly manners and possibly – just possibly – prankful habits.”  The fact that he captured over 36 ships and sent untold people to “walk the plank”, is merely ancient history to the city fathers. In fact, to be fair, Gasparilla was a cultured, educated man and at one time an officer in the Spanish Navy. He is perfect for the type of legendary character to be the namesake of such a celebration

In addition to the invasion, there are over 700 members of the pirate “Krewe”, a parade that covers over 2 miles, arts and craft dealers, vendors, food vendors, midway rides, fireworks after dark and so much more. I will say, although it is a great time you may want to be sure to attend during the daytime with any children. I mean they are pirates and I cannot vouch for their behavior.

I have included some other events that I think are worth mentioning taking place this weekend. Any of these events are sure to make a great outing for you and whoever attends with you!

The Tacky Terminologist

Lost in Suburbia by Tracy Beckerman

The Tacky Terminologist

One night while I was at a party, I was having a conversation with another mom and I asked her what her husband did for a living.
“He’s an ophthalmologist,” she told me.
“Oh, he’s an eye doctor!” I exclaimed.
“No, an oph-thal-MOL-o-gist,” she reiterated, as though I were five years-old and didn’t understand big words.
I shook my head. I guess to her, it sounded better if there were five syllables in his job title instead of three.
I politely excused myself to find someone less pretentious to talk to. So then I started to chat with a woman who said her husband was a meteorologist.
“Wow, that’s very cool,” I said. “It must be very helpful to be married to a weatherman!”
            “He’s not a weatherman,” she corrected me. “He’s a mee-tee-er-OL-o-gist.
            “What’s the difference?” I asked.
“Not all weathermen are meteorologists,” she explained. “Meterologists have a degree in meterological science.”
“Well, they both have a 50/50 chance of getting the forecast correct, right?” I laughed.  She didn’t.
I decided to leave the party before I encountered a psy-CHOL-o-gist who would want to know why I had issues with professions that end in “-ologist.”
When I got home, I thought about this whole snobby job title thing. Nowadays, it seemed everyone wanted a fancy name for their jobs. I remember being at a snooty restaurant once and asking for the bartender and being told he was actually a “mixologist.”
“Really,” I said to the host wryly. “What’s the difference?”
“A mixologist doesn’t just POUR drinks,” she clarified. “He CREATES them; like a chef.”
“What if the drinks he creates are really gross?” I asked her. “Does he still get to be called a mixologist or does he get demoted back to plain old bartender?”  She glared at me and then seated me at a lousy table in the back.
I was beginning to understand that if you go to school for something special, or you invent things, or you are just really, really good at what you do, you get to add “-ologist” to your job title. Realizing this, I decided that maybe I had been doing myself a disservice by not coming up with a more impressive title for myself. Why should I just be a Stay-at-Home Mom when I could be a “Mommyologist?” As the person who makes the lunches everyday, I could be the official “Peanut-Butter-and-Jellyologist” in our family. And with all the clothes I wash every week, I certainly think I have earned the title “Laundryologist.”
I also thought the other members of my family should have titles too. Why should my dog just be a dog, when he could be the “Barkologist.” My son is so proficient on his cellphone, I think he should be called a “Textologist.” And my daughter, the social media queen can be a “Facebookologist.”
My husband, of course, would simply be called a “Saint” for putting up with all my ridiculous rants.

My 40-year old Confession

Friday, January 28th, 2011

They say when you turn 40 you start to reflect on life and experience a bit of self-discovery.  They also say that 40 years old is a good time to access current friendships and to rid oneself of any toxic energy. I am not quite sure who “they” are but, I do confess (keep it low), I am turning 40 this February and it appears as if have some work to do! My wonderfully, shorter than me, husband threw a celebratory party in my honor this past weekend and packed our home with 65 of our nearest and dearest. As my eyes and body danced around the room that night I realized at that very instant that I was happy AND that even though at times things get stressful with the demands of work and being there for my family, I AM happy. AND, while happiness may not be an eternal state of mind for all of us, we must seize the moment when it arrives!!

I do wonder if the much talked about mother of two, Amy Chua, is happy. Or, is she so obsessed with her tough-love style of Chinese parenting that she forgets to enjoy life.  This Yale law professor’s memoir, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, reveals a tale of endless hours of forced piano and violin practice and no sleepovers for her two girls.  Amy even goes so far as to call her daughter “garbage” and further chastises her in saying, “stop being lazy, cowardly, self-indulgent and pathetic.”  Harsh! I get that Amy’s goal is to share with us “Americans” that we have the ability to shape our child’s life. But, shape it into perfection? Straight A’s? Performing at Carnegie Hall?  Nice, yes. Necessary for ours or our children’s eternal happiness, NO!

Do the best you can or as they (again, no clue who “they” are) say, “Make the most with what you’ve got.”  I’m not telling you to be an underachiever. I’m just admitting that life is hard. Parenting is hard. Marriage is hard.  And, turning 40 is hard too!  So, if it’s moments of happiness that allow us get ready for work each day, start a business venture, to go back to school, than I’m okay with that. You should be too.  No one is perfect. Not even Amy Chua.

My Most Romantic Valentine’s Day Meal and Yes I Had to Cook It

Friday, January 28th, 2011

Back in the days of Early Marriage, which my husband and I lovingly refer to as The Poverty Years, one of our hobbies was to visit an indoor food market on weekends.

While much of the food at the market was interesting, unusual, and tempting to buy only the food stall that sold interesting spices in little envelopes on the cheap was in our budget. The fresh fish flown in daily from the ocean stall or the buffalo steak butcher, among others, were not.

We’d walk the market, wonder, drool, and then go buy a cup of coffee at the coffee stall. That was our Saturday date.

One Valentine’s Day we were planning what do and were to eat. Instead of going to a chain restaurant with its frozen entrees, we decided to splurge at the fancy food stalls and cook our own  Valentine’s Day dinner.

We bought emu steaks from the fancy butcher because we’d never tried it before.

We bought a slice of the most descendant and large enough for two people cake you ever did see from the fancy bakery for dessert.

On Valentine’s Day, my husband took charge of the emu like it was his baby. He marinated the emu steaks in a mixture of soy sauce, orange juice, garlic, and ginger for an hour. When it was time to cook, we opened a bottle of the finest screw top wine we could find (we had to bow to the budget somewhere!) and poured it in our wedding crystal. Along the rest of our newlywed friends, we joked that fancy wine glasses make cheap wine taste better.

I set the table with our wedding china and my grandmother’s silver.

We turned on the music and fired up the stove. We laughed as we cooked trying to guess what emu would taste like. We danced an impromptu emu dance in the kitchen as I made the sides.

We found that emu cooks fast, in less than 15 minutes of sauté time. So while we had to cook our Valentine’s Day dinner it barely took any time at all.

While emu is a bird it doesn’t taste like chicken. It tasted like a nice slice of lean beef. The sides were delicious and the dessert was nothing short of decadent. Sure, we could have eaten a cheaper meal in a nicer restaurant but we never would have tried something so new and different if we hadn’t taken the risk and cooked our holiday meal.

What really made that dinner special was the fact that we bought it and cooked it laughing all the way. Laughter and togetherness made cooking that meal fun and romantic.

This Valentine’s Day consider grabbing your loved ones and cooking something fun together. The emu dance is optional.
