Awesome Kid-Friendly Cookbook: There’s A Chef in My Soup

October 22nd, 2010

First, a confession: I’m a huge fan of the Food Network.

It was my trusty middle-of-the-night companion when my babies wouldn’t sleep. I have learned countless tips and recipes from many of its amazing chefs. And it’s a channel I feel 100% safe leaving on with the kids around, because not only is the content family-friendly, the commercials are too. (No violent movie ads, or trailers for inappropriate TV shows.)

Of the many fabulous chefs I discovered there, Emeril Lagasse is one of my absolute favorites. Having grown up on him, it’s no surprise that my kids love him too.

We love you Emeril!

Even so, I WAS surprised (and delighted) when my 3rd grader checked out his cookbook, There’s a Chef in My Soup!, from the school library.

What makes this book so great?

  1. The illustrations and layout are fabulously fun and user-friendly
  2. Some of the recipes are SO delicious, you’ll want to serve them to guests. This is not a book about making basics. This is REAL food.
  3. The language is accessible and fun for kids

Of course, you can get loads of great recipes — including many of these  — from the web, but if you really want to teach your kids the essential life skill that is cooking, buy the book.

Want to try out a recipe or two before buying? Here are my familiy’s 3 current favorite recipes:

Garlic Studded Pot Roast

Mighty Meaty Meatloaf

Big and Chewy Oatmeal Cookies

Happy cooking!
