When you think of October, beautiful leaves and cooler temperatures usually come to mind. In the events arena, it’s sports busiest season with the World Series, NFL and NCAA underway, the NBA and NHL in preseason and NCAA Basketball gearing up.   As it relates to community events, you may have heard about the October tradition of Oktoberfest events. I thought I might give you a little background on Oktoberfest you might find interesting. (more…)

The NASCAR star and his lovely wife are raising awareness about the Tdap booster vaccine which helps protect not only ourselves against pertussis (whooping cough), it also helps reduce the risk of transmitting the disease to our newborn children. The Gordon’s opened up to Celebrity Baby Scoop about their involvement with the Sounds of Pertussis Campaign, their newborn son Leo who was named after a supermodel, and their 3-year-old daughter Ella Sofia who loves being a big sister. Happy Howl-o-ween

Friday, October 29th, 2010

During the month of October, I will go out of my way to avoid taking my kids into drug stores, party stores, and anyplace else where they will be selling Halloween costumes and accessories, for fear of the Halloween frenzy that will ensue. But one day, I made a critical error: I took my daughter into the pet shop.

“Ooh, look, Mom…dog costumes for Halloween!!! Can we get one for Riley?” she pleaded as she ogled the display of uber-cute canine costumes. “Then we can dress him up and take him trick or treating with us!” (more…)

The Recipe For Success

Friday, October 29th, 2010

This week I traveled to Omaha, NE to give a presentation to a group of business leaders about how to improve their recruiting processes.  As I was planning that talk it got me thinking about some of the stories I would share of people who have made career changes and some best practices in doing so.  First, it is so inspiring to when I see those changes occur and the joy it can bring to someone’s life, personally and professionally, when they begin doing the kind of work they love and doing at a place they like to be. 8 Ways to Get a Job at MyWorkButterfly.com

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

We’ve long been fans of Working Mother even though its very title denotes, “I have a job” when in fact with our continued economic turmoil it could be renamed, “I Want to be a Working Mother or “I Need to be a Working Mother.”  Nevertheless, Working Mother magazine is famous for its “lists” such as 2010’s, 100 Best Companies. While this may give a notable nod to those corporations who’ve increased work/life harmony, it specifically offers us the opportunity to hone in on 100 potential targets to market ourselves to.  Another such recent report by Working Mother, Career vs. Paycheck, reveals that if you view your job as a paycheck you are unhappier in life than if you view your job as a career. Hmm, we could have told you that (and we’re sure that applies to men too). The survey goes on to report additional “I knew that(s)” to interesting nuggets of information on what men still don’t know about working moms (or at least admit to knowing!). Both reports are worthy reads but may not land you that job in end. We know just the way! (more…)

Can You Hear Me Now?

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

“Hello world!” That’s how I started my very first blog post on a long forgotten blog years ago. I’m really excited to share my thoughts with everyone in The Balancing Act family and can’t wait to see what parents from around the country have to say on important educational issues. I hope to create an open dialogue with parents to discuss ways to increase student achievement. I’ll be answering your questions, sharing studying tips, showing you learning strategies and other great ways technology can be used to help students in school. Like all things, we need to start at the beginning. The teacher and parent relationship needs to be established to truly help students. (more…)
