Midnight Mashed Potatoes

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

pregnant, familyThat’s what I had just now when I woke up at midnight with a craving for the leftover mashed potatoes and gravy in the fridge. it was also necessary for me to finish it off with milk-dunked peppermint chocolate cookies. duh, everyone knows that’s what comes after mashed potatoes. Get with it.
So I’m 10 weeks and 3 days preggos (my eggos). And I feel… hungry/tired/nauseous/achy all at the same time. in a life past, I would have just now at 12:30am on a Friday been sauntering in a bar or lounge to meet up with friends making myself awesome with light cigarettes and gin and tonic in hand. Because duh, everyone knows that gin and tonics and cigarettes make someone awesome. And I was sooo with it.
But in about 6 months I’ll be welcoming a kicking and screaming tiny human (ninja hopefully but I’ll settle for a pirate) into this gin and tonic world.
This is what’s in my belly right now (swimming in mashed potatoes & peppermint chocolate cookies, of course):

Notice the subtle death stare. Impressive, right? I taught him that just now. And he’s only 10 weeks and 3 days! Imagine what kind of damage he can do at 9 months! That’s how awesome my ninja child is. Oh, I need to remember to get Tim a gift receipt after I give birth and present him with the fruit of his loins. I mean he may decide he wants the size smaller. Men are so fickle. Oh I’ll just keep the tags, make things easy. I also need to baby proof my ninja stars. So much to do!
I’m going to go make myself a sandwich.

About Koreen:   This is Koreen Alvarado’s first pregnancy. She, admittedly, has no mothering credentials to speak of except that she is pregnant and finds it amusing.  She does very important, big time things in Boston with her dog Duncan, cat Dash and her humorously tall boyfriend, Tim.

Taking the ‘Ugh’ Out of Bathing Suit Weather with Lisa C

Monday, May 24th, 2010

If you’ve enjoyed life a bit too much, suffered and hibernated through a long winter, the next sentence is going to make you shudder…

It’s bathing suit time!!!!

We all know that shopping for a suit is a real DRAG! But it doesn’t have to be. There is a way to get a great suit that downplays what you don’t like, and highlights what you do.

It’s really pretty simple if you take note of the details. Each suit has its reason for being, a quality about it that is necessary for one of us woman looking for it.

The thickness of the straps, the color, the ruffles, the height in which the bottoms fall on the legs, the ruching, gathering, prints, patterns and embellishments. It all matters!

And now for…

Bathing Suit Shopping 101.

Rule Number 1- Print the guidelines below and pick a day to go shopping — a day just for you, and you alone.

Rule Number 2- Go to your favorite bathing suit store, whether it’s a department store or a boutique, grabbing every single suit that catches your eye. Twenty suits, 50 suits, grab them all, smile at the sales woman, and happily go to the dressing room.

Rule Number 3- Ignore all of the voices in your head. Remember this is “you” time, so be patient with yourself and how you look.

Rule Number 4- Try on EVERY suit, even those that you are squeezing into. Although you won’t be purchasing anything you have to squeeze into, you should study how they look on you, the subtle details of each suit. Where the waist band falls, how ruffles look , what the color does for you.

Guidelines to Print:

TUMMY CONTROL – If you have a tummy you don’t want to bare, work a tankini, a one-piece that has shirring on the waist, or angled stripes. Also, some prints hide the figure because they fool the eye. You see the print and not the stomach!

BROAD SHOULDERS- Go for tops that have wider straps and scoop necks. Stay away from halters, which will make you look broader since the straps are so close to the neck.

LONG WAIST /SHORT LEGS- If you want your legs to look longer (and who doesn’t?), go for high-cut bottoms. Also, low necklines paired with a high-cut bottom will shorten the torso and lengthen the legs. Stay away from bottoms that fall on the hips.

SHORT WAIST / LONG LEGS- Look for higher necklines, and if you go for a bikini, choose  bottoms that sit below the natural waist, falling on the hips. Vertical stripes also lengthen the torso, and a bottom that falls slightly lower on your legs. Stay away from anything high-waisted. That will get you in trouble!

CURVY-If you’re curvy like Jennifer Hudson, proudly look for suits that fall higher on your legs, suits with belts to emphasize the waist and make sure the suit really fits well. If you’re squeezing into it, it stays at the store!

BIG BOTTOM- Don’t we all think we have this! So what to do?

Plain bottoms paired with a brighter top, ruffled tops, and even tops with prints will bring  the eye upward, away from the derriere.

If you’re lucky enough to have a SMALL BOTTOM like Kate Hudson and want it to look as if it has a bit of volume, steer clear of the implant and go for bottoms with ruffles, ruching and patterns and prints. It saves you money and works the same!!

The same goes for a SMALL BUST .

***A few More Hints:

Use belts, prints, ruffles, and shiny fabrics where you want to highlight and more subtle colors like black, navy, browns, etc. in areas that you want to downplay. Prints are more slimming when the background is black.

For waists that are more square, like Cameron Diaz, choose  suits with side cut-outs or side panels that are a different color than the rest of the suit.

And please ladies, make nice with the three-way mirror. It’s our worst enemy but could be our best friend! ‘Good luck, and good shopping!!

Who’s Your Momma? Mom-Friendly Hairstyles and Tips from Peter & Mark

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Image and video hosting by TinyPicThis month is all about honoring moms (as every month should be!) Due to their unselfish ways, all too often, the last person they take care of is themselves. Since moms are so pressed for time, we are offering up a few quick fixes and hairstyles with easy up-keep – Our guide to making mom look and feel the way she should every day of the year.

STYLES:
We all know a mom’s work is never done so when it comes to working on hair, who has time? We are here to offer up some hair advice mom might not know, because we all know there are more types of moms out there than just the soccer mom. The days of long hair on women over forty aren’t over, thanks to a lot of new treatments. Let’s start with the Keratin treatment. This treatment works wonders on unruly hair by softening, smoothing, and most importantly straightening the hair, and giving long hair that youthful luster. Whether you’re ripping your hair out over the stress of your kids, or its just thinning naturally… there is no better option for fullness than adding some extensions. Extensions not only add length (if desired) but fullness and volume for that inner fashionista.

COLOR:
To achieve the perfect hair color per person is by taking into consideration a woman’s skin and eye color. For a youthful look, whatever your hair color: remember warmer is usually better. Warm tones keep you looking youthful (isn’t that what we all want?), where flat and ashy coloring is aging. Some tones can even be so dull that they cast a green hue onto the face, adding age to a woman’s look. Eek! When looking for easy upkeep, choosing the closest color to your natural hair color is best by just giving it a “facelift”! INOA, an ammonia-free hair dye that also leaves no demarcation is a great choice for achieving that natural, easy look. Looking for an enhancement rather than a hair dye? For a no fail choice (and one that is easily forgotten about) choose a color gloss by Redken Shades EQ. A color gloss enhances natural color, and deposits tone without really changing the overall color of your hair while adding shine.

Speaking of shine, we all know mom’s are our shining stars, so as much as we wish we could help out with the kids, we’ll stick to our expertise and help out with the hair.

Divo’s Out!!!

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY

Friday, May 7th, 2010

This week I was invited to a Mother’s Day Breakfast at my daughters’ school. It’s a yearly event in which mothers join their kids in their classrooms and are reminded why being a mom is so special.

My daughters both sang to me, drew pictures of why they love me, made special bracelets and even served me breakfast.

My younger daughter also gave me the most beautiful red rose I have ever seen.  As I held this rose and looked into my daughter’s eyes, I was reminded once again of how beautiful life is.

My grandmother once told me in spanish; “la vida no te da felicidad, la vida te da momentos felices.” In other words, “life will not bring you happiness, it will bring you  happy moments to remember.”  Being with my girls that morning in school was a MOMENT for me.

May this Mother’s Day bring you a wonderful moment to remember.

Kristy.

Facing Your Fears

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

My job requires that I travel a great deal.  In fact, I am on a plane twice a week!  This is a huge accomplishment for me because I have been terrified of flying since I was about 17 years old.  I had one bad experience on a plane and I have pretty much had sweaty palms and a racing heart every time I have flown ever since…until now.  I am a firm believer that in order to conquer a fear, you have to face it head on.  I took flying lessons about a decade ago in an attempt to look my fear right in the eyes.  It helped a little, but nothing has helped me like my current situation.  I used to panic and lose sleep the night before a flight—now, I sleep like a baby.  I used to grab the leg of the person next to me at the slightest hint of turbulence—now, I fly through storm clouds with my hands in my own lap (regularly)!  I am not saying that I don’t get scared…because I DO (sometimes)!  But, my fear is nothing like it used to be.  It used to dictate my travel and vacation plans.  I have missed weddings, birthdays, holidays, and trips with friends because I just didn’t want to fly.  NEVER AGAIN!  I can–and will–travel the globe with a sense of calm.  I can sit down on a plane and consider the time “me time”—time away from cell phones and emails and time with a good book and no interruptions.  I am learning to enjoy myself and live my life without letting my fears dictate my actions.  It’s quite liberating!  I’d love to know if any of you have had a similar experience!  Share with me!  Your experience doesn’t have to be about flying—just tell me about a time you conquered one of your fears!  Maybe we can all inspire each other to take a step in the right direction!

Much Love!
